Phillip Morris launched Virginia Slims in 1968 as the first cigarette targeted specifically at women promoted with the slogan “You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby!” Just six years after launching the brand, the smoking rate of 12 year-old-girls increased by 110% Just as with young boys, and arguably more for young girls, cigarettes have long stood as symbolic of adulthood and emblematic of independence. The cancerous caveat for young girls today is the “benefit” of cigarettes as a dietary suppressant and weight management device. Particularly in young girls, identity of the cool, hip, slim, independent woman becomes associative through brand advertising and peer socialization.
